Soooo, a couple of weeks ago at the Orlando Airport I notice a Swatch shop - a Swatch shop!!! Some of you may not remember Swatch, but they began a fashion craze in the mid-eighties with multi-colored, plastic, FUN watches. As a teenager, I collected about 8 of them and would color-coordinate them to my outfits, which back then were either surf or skateboard clothes (Vision Street Wear is making a comeback too ;-)). In any case, sometime in the early nineties I must have gotten rid of my Swatch watches as I began favoring the preppy look and moved toward more, ahem, 'respectable' timepieces (brand name, leather or stainless steel bands, etc.). Also, Swatch shops are not as common in the USA, as I believe Europe and Asia are more fond of them than we are.
Well, it was truly a very welcome suprise to see that Swatch still exists and that their designs are as colorful and varied as ever. You'll find in their collection something for every taste, whether you like or miss their colorful designs and creations from the 80's (AND 90's!!) or want something 'sensible', like dress watches, stainless, diving watches, and so forth. Needless to say, I am now, very happily, somewhere in the middle: give me crazy, fun colors and designs (I DO wear pink ;-)) or classic lines and styles - I'll wear them all and will make sure to still color-coordinate them. I'm definitely back to collecting them and have already snatched a couple on eBay that are definitely out-of-the-ordinary.
This brings me to this post itself...I have discovered a Swatch that I.must.have: The Swatch Sea Monster! (Click on the image for detail)
It belongs, I believe, to their 1994 Summer collection. Look at that wristband! The colors! The cool design! Most people in their right mind would not dare wear anything like that (except kids - my two boys would fight over it, I'm certain)...but this would make ME happy.
In any case, I'm searching high-and-low for this...eBay has one at the moment (09/19/07), but sadly, one that is not working. If you see one in an far-away excursion on the web or otherwise (and don't want it for yourself ;-)), send me a clue...a very happy Atomic kind-of-guy would appreciate it!
